Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our services and approach.

Does Centred Counselling accept Medical Aid?
Unfortunately not. Centred Counselling is not registered with the HSPCSA but is registered with the ASCHP. Unfortunately, for medical aid to refund you for these sessions, Byron Werbeloff would need to be registered with the HSPCSA.
Does Byron treat and diagnose serious mental illnesses such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar, major depressive episodes, Borderline Personality Disorder?
It is not in my scope of practice as an ASCHP counsellor to treat or diagnose serious psychological disorders such as the above.
What is the Length of Each Session?
The first session is 80 minutes and all follow-up sessions are 50 minutes each.
Do you provide ONLINE and IN-PERSON sessions?
Byron provides both in-person and virtual online sessions via Microsoft Teams.
How long will it take to see results, and how often should I be doing counselling?
The number of sessions would be dependent on the complexity of the issue and your timeframe. In some scenarios, results can be seen almost immediately; in others, it can take months.

For example, anger management typically takes anywhere between 2 and 8 sessions, with the average number of sessions being 4.
I normally recommend doing one session per week for the first month, then re-evaluating thereafter.
Can Byron diagnose disorders and or prescribe medication?
No, as a registered ASCHP counsellor, I am not allowed to diagnose or prescribe medication.
A diagnosis can only be made by a qualified psychologist or psychiatrist. A psychiatrist or your local GP would be the go-to person for prescriptions, as a psychologist is not allowed to prescribe.
What if I don’t want a soft-spoken and understanding approach in my counselling? What if I'm looking for coaching rather than counselling?
Byron provides a range of counselling approaches and bases the style and method on what works best for the client.
Yes, Byron can provide a more direct, firm coaching approach if that's what you are looking for.
Byron is solution - and empathy-oriented in his approach. He prides himself on his unbiased, non-judgmental, and non-discriminatory counselling approach.
Can I bring my partner to one of my sessions?
It depends on whether there is a conflict of interest. We will need to discuss and assess this on a case-by-case basis. For example, in the case of infidelity, it may be a very useful tool to bring the partner into one of the sessions and explain the process going forward for both of you.
Am I a weak person for seeking counselling? My parents and culture both see counselling as something only weak people do.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions. Seeking counselling services does not mean that a person is weak or damaged in any way. Counselling is meant to be a safe space for you to voice your ideas and thoughts, as well as to help you find solutions and/or acceptance. Some of the most successful individuals receive counselling at all levels in society.
Are online sessions really as effective as in-person sessions?
Since Covid times, there has been a massive shift towards virtual sessions. I personally have found that clients have benefited equally from in-person and virtual sessions. In fact, roughly 50% of my clients receive online counselling (even those who live within a 2km radius of my office).
There is an added benefit: the client can receive counselling in the comfort of their own space, saving them time, effort, and the stress of driving to and from sessions. However, in certain scenarios, it would be slightly better to receive in-person counselling, for example, the first marriage counselling session can sometimes be slightly more beneficial in person.
What are my work hours?
Monday to Thursdays, 09.30 - 18.30
Fridays 09.30 - 18.00
Saturdays 09.00 - 13.30
What do I do in case of an emergency outside of work hours?
Contact Byron on 0844853541 via WhatsApp and explain the emergency. Byron will come back to you as soon as possible. All emergency sessions will have a 30% additional surcharge due to out-of-office times.
What can I expect at my first Individual counselling session?
Byron will start off by getting to know you. He will ask you to give a background of your life and of the issue at hand.
He will then do a detailed medical case history with you (voluntary) to determine if medical factors could be playing a part in the symptoms you're experiencing.
A summary of what has been discovered will be discussed.
The process going forward and possible solutions to the problem at hand will then be discussed, including the number of sessions, frequency, and timeline.
Byron's integrated approach combines medical and psychological processes, empathy, systems thinking, and solution-driven strategies to ensure maximum benefit at every session. This integrated approach allows for faster long-term results that you will feel after the first session!
How do you structure couples and marriage counselling sessions, and what should I expect?
The first couple/marriage counselling session will mainly focus on the relationship history and the issues negatively affecting the relationship. From there, we begin to understand the root causes and how we can tackle these issues at their source.
Byron utilises an unorthodox approach to ensure maximum benefit. Each partner most likely will need to do a minimum of 2 private sessions as well, within the marriage counselling process. This ensures that no details are missed, and reinforcement of solution-based strategies can be focused on.

The structure that he typically uses is:
Day 1) 80-minute joint session (both partners)
Day 1-6) 1 private (1-on-1) session for each partner
Day 7) 50-minute joint session
Day 8-20) 1 private session for each partner
Day 21) 50-minute joint session

There may be more or fewer sessions than the structure above, depending on the complexity and severity of the issue.
What are you main specialties?
Byron has extensive experience in all the areas listed in the services & support section. If Byron had to list his top 7 areas of specialisation, it would be:
1. Trauma & PTSD symptoms
2. ADHD
3. Anxiety & depression symptoms
4. Anger Management
5. Health, Wellness, Chronic Illness
6. Couples/Marriage Counselling - Especially infidelity and Communication issues
7. Sports performance counselling and self-image building.

You are welcome to make payment via card machine or EFT at the end of each session. For the first session, a 25% deposit is required to confirm the booking. The remainder will be paid at the end of the first session.

Once POP has been received with the booking confirmation form, your first session has been booked. All future sessions will be booked via WhatsApp with Byron directly.
Do I need to bring anything to my first session?
No, however, if you would like to bring a medical history summary, that is completely up to you. Some clients bring a small notebook to take notes on the strategies developed in their sessions.
I'm nervous to start counselling. Is that normal?
Yes, nervousness is completely normal. It means you want this to work and you don't want your situation to worsen during the counselling process.
This means you care and are committed to self-growth! It's a very positive sign. Nothing discussed is forced or required to be acted on. These sessions are mainly discussion-based. We will go at your pace and implement strategies only when you're ready and have agreed.
Just about all my clients come out of the first session saying that they thought it would be like an interrogation or a doctor's appointment. They then add that it was actually more like a friendly conversation, making it a real weight lifted off their shoulders.
Do you work all ages?
Byron works with all individuals aged 16 and older. He has even worked with 85-year-old patients!
