## Why Love Isn’t Enough to Make a Marriage Work

### Love Is the Beginning—not the Entire Plan

When two people fall in love, it can feel as though the most important decision has already been made. You care about each other, enjoy being together and imagine a future as a couple. It is understandable to believe that the rest will work itself out.

But love does not automatically tell you how to manage money, divide household responsibilities, handle disagreements, set boundaries with family or respond when one partner is under pressure. Two people can love each other sincerely and still have very different expectations about what marriage should look like.

A lasting marriage is not built on feelings alone. It also depends on what partners practise every day: honest communication, mutual respect, accountability, practical agreements and a willingness to keep learning about each other.

This is one reason premarital counselling can be valuable. It gives couples a chance to discuss important subjects before wedding plans, busy schedules and everyday responsibilities take over.

### 1. Love Does Not Mean You Automatically Understand Each Other

You may assume your partner understands what makes you feel appreciated, what you consider disrespectful or how you expect a household to function. Your partner may be making equally strong assumptions about you. Both of you can be sincere and still misunderstand each other.

Family backgrounds often shape these expectations. One person may have grown up in a home where money was discussed openly; another may have learned that finances are private. One may see regular contact with extended family as essential, while the other values more independence. Neither expectation should be treated as obvious or universal.

The solution is not to guess correctly. It is to ask questions, explain your perspective and make agreements together. Premarital counselling can help couples identify assumptions that might otherwise remain hidden until they become a source of resentment.

### 2. Love Does Not Replace Communication Skills

When a partner is upset, the other may become defensive, withdraw or focus on proving that their intentions were good. But good intentions do not automatically remove the impact of a hurtful comment or an unmet expectation.

Healthy communication involves expressing concerns clearly, listening to understand, checking assumptions and being willing to discuss uncomfortable topics. It also means being able to disagree without contempt, humiliation or threats.

Couples do not need to agree on every issue. They do need a reliable way to talk about differences, decide what matters most and return to a conversation when emotions have settled.

### 3. Love Does Not Automatically Make You Financially Compatible

Money can carry different meanings for different people. One partner may value saving and security; the other may prioritise experiences or generosity. Some couples expect to combine finances, while others prefer separate accounts or a shared arrangement.

Before marriage, discuss income, debts, spending, saving, financial support for relatives, borrowing, lending and how large purchases will be decided. Agree on a regular financial review so both partners understand the household’s financial position.

In South Africa, couples should also understand the consequences of their matrimonial property regime. A qualified attorney or notary can explain the legal options and prepare an antenuptial contract where appropriate. Counselling can help partners discuss their expectations, but it is not a substitute for legal advice.

### 4. Love Does Not Decide Who Is Responsible for What

A common source of tension is the belief that responsibilities will naturally be shared because both partners care about each other. In practice, one person may end up organising appointments, noticing what needs cleaning, arranging repairs, planning meals or remembering family commitments, while the other mainly notices the tasks they personally complete.

Both partners may feel they are doing more than their fair share because they see different parts of the workload. Without a clear conversation, the disagreement may remain unspoken until it emerges as irritation or an argument.

Discuss who is responsible for household tasks, maintenance, children if you have them, pets, administration and the planning that sits behind each task. Agree on standards and review the division when circumstances change. Clear responsibility does not prevent partners from helping each other; it reduces uncertainty about who will make sure things get done.

### 5. Love Does Not Eliminate Conflict

Even compatible couples will disagree. Stress, fatigue, financial pressure, family expectations and changing life circumstances can all create tension. A good marriage is not one in which conflict never happens; it is one in which both people work to handle conflict constructively.

Partners need to learn how to pause an escalating discussion, return to it, take responsibility for their own behaviour and repair the relationship after hurt has occurred. An apology matters, but it needs to be followed by behaviour that demonstrates change.

Premarital counselling can help couples recognise their usual conflict patterns and agree on ways to manage them before those patterns become entrenched.

### 6. Love Does Not Mean You Share Every Value or Goal

Couples may have different views about children, religion, careers, lifestyle, where to live, extended family, socialising or what financial security should look like. Some differences can be negotiated; others may represent fundamental incompatibilities.

The important task is to understand which values are essential to each person, where flexibility is possible and how decisions will be made. Do not assume that a partner will change their mind after the wedding, or that an important disagreement will disappear because you love each other.

A respectful conversation is not a demand for identical opinions. It is an opportunity to decide whether you can build a shared life while respecting each other’s needs and identities.

### 7. Love Needs Honesty and Accountability

A strong relationship requires the ability to acknowledge mistakes. If one partner cannot admit when they have caused hurt, every disagreement can become a debate about who is to blame rather than an opportunity to solve the problem.

Accountability means recognising your own actions, acknowledging their impact and taking realistic steps to do better. It does not mean accepting blame for everything or excusing a partner’s harmful behaviour.

Both people need to be able to raise concerns honestly and hear difficult feedback without humiliation or retaliation. Trust grows when words and actions align over time.

### 8. Love Is Not a Substitute for Daily Connection

As life becomes busy, couples can start talking mainly about tasks: work, shopping, bills, children, appointments and what needs to happen next. They may still care about each other but gradually lose opportunities to share feelings, worries, ideas and ordinary experiences.

Protect a small amount of time each day to check in. Ask how your partner felt about the day, whether anything is troubling them and what they would like you to understand. Five minutes can be a useful starting point, although some conversations need much longer.

Daily connection is not another chore to tick off. It is a way of keeping each other informed about what is happening emotionally, rather than discovering much later that one partner has been struggling in silence.

### One Plus One Equals Three: Build a Partnership, Not Just a Romance

At Centred Counselling & Mediation, “One Plus One Equals Three” describes a relationship in which two people combine their strengths to create something stronger than either could build alone. One partner may be detail-oriented, while the other sees the wider picture. One may be good at planning, while the other adapts quickly when circumstances change.

The aim is not to label one partner as superior or to make one person responsible for fixing the other. Both partners retain their individuality and accountability. Instead, they learn to recognise what each brings, compensate constructively for areas of difficulty and make decisions that benefit the relationship as a whole.

This takes communication, honesty, agreed responsibilities and the willingness to let the person with relevant strengths help lead in a particular area—while ensuring that both partners have a voice in the decisions that affect them.

Love can motivate two people to build a life together. These habits help them work out how to build that life in practice.

### Why Premarital Counselling Is Worth Considering

Premarital counselling is not a prediction that a marriage will fail, nor is it a test of whether a couple is perfect for each other. It is a chance to prepare intentionally and discuss the topics that can be easy to postpone when a relationship feels exciting and secure.

A counsellor can help couples explore expectations, practise difficult conversations, identify areas of agreement and difference, and develop practical tools for communication and conflict resolution. The aim is not to remove every future challenge, but to help both partners approach challenges with greater understanding.

Couples who are already married can also benefit from reviewing these areas. Where there is abuse, coercion or intimidation, safety and appropriate individual support should take priority over joint counselling.

### Questions Couples Often Ask

#### Does love matter less than practical compatibility?

Love matters greatly, but it works alongside communication, respect, shared expectations and the ability to solve problems together. There is no single formula that guarantees a successful marriage.

#### Should we resolve every disagreement before getting married?

It may not be possible to resolve every difference, and some questions will change over time. It is important to identify major differences, understand each other’s position and agree on how you will make decisions when you disagree.

#### What if we find a serious incompatibility during premarital counselling?

That is important information to consider honestly. Some differences can be negotiated; others may require more reflection about whether your long-term goals are compatible. The purpose is not to pressure you into a particular decision.

#### Can premarital counselling prevent divorce?

It cannot guarantee that a marriage will last. It can help couples discuss expectations, develop communication skills and identify concerns that deserve attention before marriage.

#### What does One Plus One Equals Three mean?

It describes two people combining their strengths and perspectives to build a partnership that is more capable than either person working alone, while retaining individuality and shared responsibility.

### Prepare for the Marriage, Not Only the Wedding

Love is a meaningful reason to choose a life together. A strong marriage also asks you to keep communicating, take responsibility, make practical agreements and treat each other as partners when life becomes difficult.

If you are preparing to get married, premarital counselling at Centred Counselling & Mediation in Sunninghill, Sandton, can help you have these conversations and build a clearer foundation for your shared future.

Let’s get you back on track!
