The Biggest Lie Couples Tell Each Other Is "I'm Fine."

> *“The words "I'm fine" have probably ended more relationships than the words "I want to leave."”*

One of the biggest misconceptions about relationships is that conflict destroys them.

It certainly can.

But in my experience as a counsellor, what destroys far more relationships is **emotional avoidance**.

People stop telling each other what's really happening.

Instead, they say two simple words: **"I'm fine."**

At first, it seems harmless. You don't want another argument. You're tired. You convince yourself it's not worth bringing up. So you keep quiet.

Months later, you're no longer protecting the relationship. You're protecting yourself from the relationship.

### Every 'I'm Fine' Usually Means Something Else

Rarely does 'I'm fine' actually mean someone is fine.

Sometimes it means:

- I'm disappointed.
- I don't think you'll understand.
- I'm tired of asking.
- I've stopped believing anything will change.

Those feelings don't disappear because they weren't spoken. They simply become quieter until they become resentment.

### The Slow Build-Up Nobody Notices

Imagine filling a glass with a single drop of water every day. One drop seems insignificant. Then one day the glass overflows.

Relationships work exactly the same way. It's rarely one argument. It's years of unspoken disappointments, small moments of feeling dismissed and tiny hurts that never found words.

### Why People Stop Speaking Up

Many people think their partner no longer cares. Often, they've simply tried before and nothing changed. Eventually they stop talking—not because they have nothing to say—but because hope slowly disappears.

### The Psychology Behind Emotional Withdrawal

Human beings naturally move towards people who make them feel understood. When someone feels consistently ignored or emotionally dismissed, the brain begins looking for psychological safety elsewhere.

The danger isn't the conversation itself. The danger is when emotional needs are met everywhere except at home.

### "But We Never Fight"

The absence of conflict isn't always a sign of peace. Sometimes it's evidence that someone stopped feeling safe enough to be honest.

### The Conversations That Matter Most

Most couples spend hours talking every week—but often only about responsibilities.

**Try asking:**

- What's been on your mind lately?
- What have you been worrying about?
- What's something I haven't noticed?

Curiosity reconnects people. Assumptions separate them.

### Before You Say 'I'm Fine' Again

Ask yourself why.

- Are you protecting the relationship?
- Or are you protecting yourself from disappointment?

Every honest conversation gives a relationship another opportunity to grow. Every avoided conversation quietly teaches it to drift apart.

### Final Thoughts

Relationships don't usually fail because people suddenly stop loving one another.

More often, they fail because people stop allowing themselves to be known.

Behind every 'I'm fine' is usually a sentence that never found the courage to be spoken.

Perhaps the strongest relationships aren't those without problems.

Perhaps they're the ones where both people feel safe enough to say:

> *"I'm actually not fine... can we talk?"*

That conversation may feel uncomfortable today. But it might save years of silence tomorrow.

**Let's get you back on track!**
