## How to Know If You’re Ready for Marriage

### Being in Love and Being Ready for Marriage Are Related—but Not Identical

Getting married is a meaningful commitment, and it is natural to wonder whether you are ready. You may love your partner, enjoy your life together and look forward to the future, yet still have questions about money, children, responsibilities or how you will manage difficult periods.

Readiness does not mean having a perfect relationship or knowing exactly what the next thirty years will look like. It means being willing to face the realities of shared life with honesty, respect, flexibility and accountability.

There is no checklist that can guarantee a successful marriage. However, certain skills and conversations can help you make a more informed decision before the wedding.

### 1. You Can Talk Honestly About Difficult Subjects

A useful sign of readiness is being able to discuss uncomfortable topics without automatically avoiding them, attacking each other or shutting the conversation down. These subjects may include money, children, sex, family boundaries, career ambitions, health, values and expectations about daily life.

You do not need to agree on everything. You do need to be able to explain your perspective, listen to your partner’s, ask questions and work towards an agreement where possible. If a subject is repeatedly avoided because one person fears the other’s reaction, that deserves attention before marriage.

Ask yourselves: Can we raise concerns respectfully? Can we admit when we do not understand each other? Can we return to a difficult conversation after taking time to calm down?

### 2. You Take Responsibility for Your Own Behaviour

Marriage does not remove personal responsibility. Being ready means recognising that your actions affect your partner and being willing to acknowledge mistakes, apologise sincerely and change behaviour where necessary.

Notice what happens when you are criticised or disappointed. Can you consider feedback without treating it as an attack? Can you admit your part in a disagreement without insisting that your partner must accept all the blame? Can you distinguish between explaining your intentions and excusing the impact of your actions?

Accountability must be mutual. Readiness does not mean accepting mistreatment or being responsible for managing another person’s behaviour.

### 3. You Understand That Love Does Not Eliminate Differences

Partners often enter marriage with different family backgrounds, habits, personalities and ideas about what a good life looks like. One person may value structure and predictability; the other may be more spontaneous. One may want frequent family contact; the other may prefer more privacy.

The question is not whether you are identical. It is whether you can understand each other’s differences, identify which matters are negotiable and agree on how to make decisions together. Do not assume that a fundamental difference will disappear after the wedding.

Readiness includes being honest about the differences you can accept, the compromises you can genuinely live with and the values that are essential to you.

### 4. You Have Discussed Finances Openly

You do not need to be wealthy to be ready for marriage, but you should be willing to discuss your financial reality. That includes income, debts, spending habits, saving, financial responsibilities to relatives, borrowing, lending and expectations about major purchases.

Decide how you will organise your finances, how transparent you will be and how often you will review the household budget. Discuss what happens if one person loses income, takes time off work or needs to support a family member.

In South Africa, understand the legal consequences of your intended matrimonial property regime. A qualified attorney or notary should advise you about an antenuptial contract and the options available. Premarital counselling can help you discuss the values and expectations behind financial decisions, but it is not legal advice.

### 5. You Have Realistic Expectations About Household and Family Roles

Readiness includes discussing how everyday life will work, not only the big romantic milestones. Who will cook, clean, arrange repairs, manage bills, organise appointments and look after pets? If you plan to have children, how will you share caregiving and the mental load of parenting?

Avoid assuming that responsibilities will automatically divide fairly. Each partner may notice the work they do while overlooking the planning or follow-through done by the other. Discuss who is responsible for what, what standards you expect and how you will review the arrangement if circumstances change.

Clear roles do not mean that partners never help each other. They reduce confusion by ensuring that tasks have an agreed owner.

### 6. You Can Disagree Without Humiliating or Frightening Each Other

All couples disagree. A more useful sign of readiness is the way disagreements are handled. Can you express frustration without threats, contempt, insults or public humiliation? Can you take a break when emotions escalate and return to the issue at an agreed time?

Can you apologise and repair after an argument? Can you focus on the problem rather than using old mistakes as weapons? These skills can be learned, but recurring destructive patterns should not be dismissed as ordinary relationship drama.

Where there is abuse, coercion, intimidation or fear of retaliation, safety must come first. Joint counselling may not be appropriate in those circumstances; individual support and safety planning may be needed.

### 7. You Can Make Decisions as a Team

A marriage involves decisions that affect both people. Readiness means being able to consult each other on important matters, consider the impact of choices and negotiate when your preferences differ.

Teamwork does not require equal expertise in every area. One partner may be better at budgeting, planning or noticing emotional dynamics. That person may take the lead in a particular area, provided the arrangement is respectful and both partners have a voice in decisions that affect them.

The aim is not to win against your partner. It is to find solutions that respect both people and support the shared life you are building.

### 8. You Can Maintain Connection Amid Everyday Responsibilities

Work, chores, family commitments and future children can take up much of a couple’s time. Readiness includes understanding that emotional connection needs attention rather than assuming it will happen automatically.

Consider building a daily check-in—even five minutes to ask how your partner is feeling, what has been on their mind or whether something affected them during the day. Make room for conversations that are not only about household administration.

Also discuss how you will protect time together if work schedules differ, one partner travels or you have different sleep routines. The goal is intentional connection, not identical schedules.

### 9. You Know What Commitment Means to Each of You

People can use the word commitment while imagining different things. For one person, it may mean staying together through almost any difficulty; for another, it may mean consistently choosing honesty, respect and shared effort.

Discuss what fidelity means to both of you, what boundaries you expect, how you will handle outside pressure and what you would do if the relationship became strained. Commitment should not be used to excuse abuse or require someone to remain in an unsafe relationship.

You should be able to discuss not only the wedding you are planning, but the kind of partnership you want to create afterwards.

### 10. You Are Choosing Marriage Freely—not Because of Pressure

Readiness is harder to assess when a person feels pressured by family, age, pregnancy, finances, social expectations or the amount already spent on a wedding. Those pressures may be real, but they should not replace a free and considered decision.

Both partners should have room to express uncertainty, ask questions and request more time without being threatened or shamed. If serious concerns remain unresolved, pausing to address them can be more responsible than hoping they will disappear after the ceremony.

A decision to marry should be based on a clear understanding of the commitment and a voluntary choice by both people.

### One Plus One Equals Three: Readiness Means Being Willing to Build Together

At Centred Counselling & Mediation, “One Plus One Equals Three” describes a partnership in which two people combine their strengths, perspectives and abilities to create something more effective than either person could build alone.

One partner may be more organised, while the other is adaptable. One may be skilled at planning finances, while the other is better at recognising emotional dynamics. These differences can become strengths when partners respect them, discuss responsibilities and use them to support the relationship.

The philosophy does not mean one partner is superior or that either person should fix the other. Both retain their individuality and accountability. Readiness is shown by a willingness to communicate, learn, negotiate and make practical agreements that benefit both people.

You do not need to arrive at marriage fully developed. You do need to be willing to grow as individuals and as a team.

### How Premarital Counselling Can Help

Premarital counselling offers a structured setting to explore expectations, identify strengths and areas of concern, practise difficult conversations and make plans for the realities of married life.

It is not an exam that determines whether a couple is good enough for marriage, and it cannot guarantee a trouble-free relationship. It can help partners understand each other more clearly and make a more informed decision about their future.

If you discover a serious difference, the goal is not to force agreement. It is to understand what the difference means, explore realistic options and decide freely how to proceed.

### Questions Couples Often Ask

#### Is there a perfect age to get married?

There is no single age that determines readiness. Emotional maturity, freedom from pressure, realistic expectations and the ability to discuss important issues are more useful considerations than age alone.

#### Do we need to have everything figured out before marriage?

No. Life will change, and no couple can anticipate every challenge. It is helpful to discuss major issues, understand each other’s expectations and develop ways to make decisions together.

#### What if one of us feels ready and the other does not?

Take the concern seriously and explore it without pressure. Understand what the uncertainty is about and whether more time, information or counselling could help. Both people should be free to make a considered choice.

#### Can premarital counselling tell us whether we are compatible?

It can help you explore compatibility, expectations and areas of difference, but it cannot make the decision for you or predict the future with certainty.

#### Does readiness mean we never argue?

No. Readiness includes recognising that disagreements happen and developing respectful ways to handle them, repair hurt and make decisions together.

### You Do Not Need to Be Perfect—You Need to Be Prepared to Build Together

Being ready for marriage does not mean having no weaknesses, doubts or differences. It means being willing to communicate honestly, take responsibility, respect each other’s individuality and work through challenges without assuming love will do all the work.

If you are preparing to get married, premarital counselling at Centred Counselling & Mediation in Sunninghill, Sandton, can help you explore these questions and build a clearer foundation for your shared future.

Let’s get you back on track!
